| Thallus squamulose, 2–7 cm wide. Squamules 0.4–1.2 (–2.0) mm wide, ascending, geotropically orientated, discrete or rarely becoming somewhat aggregated, weakly to strongly convex, grey-green or yellowish to dark brown, dull; margin entire or slightly crenulate, not or slightly upturned, concolorous with the upper surface; isidia absent. Soredia yellowish brown along the margin, greenish on the underside, farinose to granular, forming marginal labriform soralia. Upper cortex 30–40 μm thick, including an epinecral layer to 15 μm thick. Apothecia and pycnidia not observed in Australian specimens. [Apothecia reported to be uncommon, to 1.5 (–2.5) mm wide, marginal, plane; disc blue-white-pruinose, egyrose; margin prominent, entire to flexuose; proper exciple colourless within, with a green rim; epihymenium olive-green; hypothecium pale to dark brown; mature asci very rare; ascospores simple, ellipsoidal, 9–12 × 2.5–4.0 μm; pycnidia sessile, black, attached marginally or laminally to the upper or lower surface of the squamules or directly to the substratum; conidia bacilliform, 7.5 × 1 μm (Schneider, 1979; Timdal, 2004)]. CHEMISTRY: Cortex and medulla K–, C+ red, KC+ red, P–; containing lecanoric acid (major), ±orsellinic acid (trace). |

| This common species occurs in all States and the A.C.T.; grows on charred wood and bark, more rarely on decorticated wood. Also in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. | ||
